“ALWAYS DO”
I wrote this one with a lot on my mind. A collage of thoughts. It is an honest look at love vs need. I wanted this to be the first single as it paints a really stark reality about some relationships…. they just aren’t black and white. Many are grey. I think as a songwriter I’ve been ignoring or overlooking some of the not-so happy endings. The endings where there is zero resolution. How do you move on?
When I first wrote the song and showed it to Howard, he pointed a lyric in the middle of the song and said “Start there”. So I re-wrote the song from the middle of the story and made that the start and that really helped to get my mind in the right place. Once I saw the lane I needed to stay in it was easy to accelerate the story til the end with zero breaks.
I think many relationships are really wonderful and I do enjoy writing about love and joyful moments… but I wanted to share some stories of the times when we get hurt or there isn’t a clear path of what to do. Do you know how you’d handle love if it was difficult?
I think we’ve all had our hearts pulled in different directions or hurt, so this one is about falling in love and what that can cost.
When it came time to work on the sound of the song, Howard was insistent that “Always Do” should lead from a raw vocal into an intense orchestral backdrop. I did so many vocal takes for this song. I wasn’t sure I was going to “get” it. But we finally got there.
